Online Business: a beginners guide

In this post I want to give some answers to all of those who, after looking at my business, turn to me searching for simple (and yet hard to find) explanations.

So many people live their life like there was no other way to live it.

They wake up early in the morning, commute maybe 1 or 2 hours to get to their jobs. Work 9-5 with something they often are not passionate about, or even worse, something they truly hate.

Some people work impossible shifts. Most people are underpaid and under-stimulated. Some have terrible bosses, others have terrible coworkers.

Some extra lucky ones… might have both under the same roof!

Luckily, more and more people are starting to realize that there’s a way out of it.

Much closer than one may think.

The way out is called Online Business.

What is an Online Business?

Generally, when we talk about Online Business, we mean an income opportunity that leverages the internet to reach an audience (or marketing target).

What kind of Business can be run online?

Any business can become an Online Business.

Either if you want to sell cookies or if you are a plumber, the most obvious way to get more visibility and reach more customers (thus get more sales) would be by meeting them where they are. On the web.

How do I start an Online Business?

Defining your market niche will be the first step. You must know what to sell and to whom.

A logical way to go is start with something that you are passionate and expert about.

Are you a globetrotter, travel enthusiast, kitchen guru, video editing expert or anything else? Start a blog about it.

Put out some of your best pictures, videos,  recipes, tutorials, and write about what you’re good at. Provide value.

People that share your same interests will start to follow you and listen to what you have to say.

This relationship with your followers can later be turned into profit. Keep reading…

What skills do I need?

It really depends on what path you’re going to take.

If you go for blogging you’ll probably need good content-writing (copyright) skills.

If you want to sell products or services you’ll need some marketing skills.

If you want to become an influencer on Facebook or Instagram you will have to learn how to work with Social Media.

In any case you will have to identify your strategy and get started somewhere.

If you have no idea where to begin, I warmly recommend you to watch the very same free tutorials that got me started when I was in your same position.

Do I need a budget?

I would be lying if I told you that you could make money online with a $0 budget!

Obviously you’ll need a computer and an internet connection. Nowadays you can get free WiFi in any library or café. So if you own a laptop you’re almost good to go!

Yes, almost.

You will need at least one more thing: a website.

To build a website (or a blog) you must register a domain name and host it somewhere.

The cost for a domain name is normally around $15 per year. The cost for a web hosting service can vary between $15 and hundreds of dollars per year.

To keep it realistic, I would say, an initial budget of $50-$100 per year (that doesn’t include your latte at the local coffeeshop!).

How can I make profit with a blog or website?

There are different ways to generate an income online.

To make it simple let’s narrow it down to two main solutions: selling products and services or selling advertising spots on your webpage.

Selling advertising spots

The key is creating a blog with good content that will attract visitors. The more visitors you have the more attractive your webpage will become for advertisers who want to get visibility on your website.

At that stage you will be able to put banners and ads on your blog and get paid by your advertisers when your visitors click on them.

Selling products and services

When you have established a good relationship with your followers (by providing them value in the form of good and interesting content, like articles, posts, photos, videos, reviews etc.), you will be able to endorse products and services that you consider relevant for your target audience.

If your visitors trust you, they will follow your recommendations and make purchases through your affiliate links.

An affiliate link is a link to a product that is traceable back to you as affiliate partner of that specific product (more about it in the free tutorials).

Whenever a purchase is made through one of your affiliate links, you will receive an affiliate commission.

Why should I start an Online Business?

Since you can get an internet connection more or less anywhere on the planet (and bringing along your laptop won’t give you a back-pain), you will be able to run your business from anywhere in the world. That’s what is called “geographical freedom” or “location independence”.

With a Business online you are able to reach your customers where they are.

Just think of how you came across my webpage. We are probably hundreds, or thousand of miles away from each other. And yet, you found me. Or did I find you?

You will be your own boss, no-one deciding above your head.

You’ll choose your own working hours.

No more commuting.

Go on vacation without asking for permission.

Bring your work while on vacation and work from anywhere you like.

Generate passive incomes (make profit while not actively working).

Not bad eh? And the list could be much longer.

What I appreciate the most is to be able to work with something that I’m truly passionate about and that provides value to others.

Ain’t that the best reward?

Conclusions

If you’re thinking about starting your own Online Business, I have a few recommendations.

Be curious, dare to fail (because you will fail, it’s a must), be consistent, don’t give up, don’t procrastinate, be authentic.

Most importantly: get the skills that are necessary to succeed.

*And yes! This IS an affiliate link! Which means that if you should decide to make a purchase once you’re in, I’ll get a small commission on it. This will contribute to keep my business alive and I’ll be able to continue to help people like you and me to change their life for the better!
